We have found the following to be the best pickups for banjo. Although a pre-amp is not necessary, it is recommended for the Jones & the Fishman. The Stelling Pick-up is exceptionally "hot" & does not require a pre-amp.

All pick-ups require dual rim rods for installation, except the McIntyre Feather and Shadow pickups.

Active Humbucking Banjo Pickup features natural sound and accurate microphone-like quality. With key input (and ears) from several top banjo players, Fishman's R & D team has spent over a year refining and tweaking this pickup's performance.
Like it's soundhole-pickup cousin, which shares the Rare Earth name, this new banjo pickup features a quiet humbucking coil that dutifully rejects EMI induced noise. A powerful Neodymium magnet in the pickup focuses the banjo's acoustic energy through a small steel shim that is affixed to the head of the banjo.
Hidden in the pickup's housing is a stealthy preamplifier which strengthens the signal and preserves the natural sound of the instrument. The Rare Earth Humbucking Banjo pickup mounts on instruments with either single or dual co-coordinator rods (single rod instruments require a special fitting).

This extremely lightweight pick-up produces an excellent, natural sounding banjo tone, and is one of the easiest pickups to install. Simply peel the protective paper off the unit and place the pickup directly under the bridge, on the under side of the head. A small wire wraps around the rim rod, one time. The jack installs into one of the flange holes. (Instructions are included.) For best results, an acoustic pre-amp is recommended (to boost the power). (1 year warranty).

The Shure Beta 98H/C (also available as the WB98H/C for use with wireless systems) is a premium cardioid condenser instrumental microphone that clamps onto the bell of wind instruments or onto the rim of percussion instruments. The integrated gooseneck and ratcheting swivel joint allows the microphone to be easily positioned and secured in place, and an isolation shock-mount reduces the transmission of instrument "key noise" and other mechanical noise. A gooseneck angle brace is included to provide better retention of the microphone placement during more active performances.
