For the beginning banjo player, we recommend starting with You Can Teach Yourself Banjo. This course will definitely give you an understanding of how and why, as well as demonstrates each technique with a song. Each lesson builds upon the techniques learned in the previous lesson. By the end of this course, you should be able to play any song you want to play on the banjo.

Create Your Own Arrangements By Ear
The video, Create Your Own Arrangements By Ear, is also for beginning players. It goes into detail on the chord locations all over the fingerboard, how to pick out the tune for a song, and how to turn a tune into a bluegrass song on the 5-string. This works well as a supplement to You Can Teach Yourself Banjo, although, if you have some playing experience, you should be able to work with this by itself.

The Banjo Handbook
is also a recommended companion book for You Can Teach Yourself Banjo, as well as for players at other levels. It is a reference book which contains banjo set-up information (setting the bridge, adjusting the playing action, tightening the head, etc.) basic roll patterns, advanced rolls, licks, back-up licks, songs, and more.

The course which follows these is Splitting The Licks on the 5-String Banjo. By the end of this you should be able to play any song "by ear" on the banjo in several different styles-Scruggs, melodic, and advanced.

Back-Up Banjo
will teach you to play along with vocalists and other instruments. It is a very comprehensive course, designed to help you improvise your back-up. A lead arrangement is included with each song, too, so that you can record the lead and practice the back-up along with the lead.

The video set, You Can Play Back-Up by Ear, is a great companion course to the Back-Up Banjo Book/Video course. You can practice playing back-up with other instruments. By the end of this course, you should be very comfortable playing back-up with anyone. Also, you should really know your fingerboard.
