This 2 hour DVD includes a wealth of information of interest to serious banjo players - or serious students of the instrument - at any skill level. Ron discusses and demonstrates many of the aspects that set the "pro sound" apart from the sort of tone and style generally associated with amateur pickers. Regardless of their experience with the banjo, Ron's tips and insights can help your customers get more from their banjo playing.
He describes how he approaches right hand positioning and attack, plus the importance of playing a clearly defined melody in your solos. In the process of teaching his breaks on several vocal numbers or simple fiddle tunes, Ron first shows where the plain melody as it might be sung lies on the fretboard. He then demonstrates how to use common banjo rolls and phrases to generate an effective, "professional sounding" solo which strongly states that melody.
Ron also teaches a number of his own banjo instrumentals and other tunes he has recorded, with each being first played with a small group and then broken down lick-by-lick before being again demonstrated in a split screen setting, both fast and slow. Using the Angle button on the DVD controller, the viewer can select among three different screen orientations during these split screen sections: background shot of the left hand with a smaller right hand inset shot; reverse angle with a right hand background shot and an inset of the left; side-by-side shots with each hand of equal size.
