Comparison between Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard & Stelling Sunflower 5-String Banjos

The Gibson Earl Scruggs 5-String Banjo and the Stelling Sunflower 5-String banjo are both built with a beautifully figured maple neck and resonator, and a fingerboard of genuine ebony, and have nickel plated metal components. Both banjos are extremely fine instruments, for beauty, for sound and for ease of playability. The tonal differences are primarily due to the other components - especially the rim and tone ring, which form the "heart" of the banjo.

Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard The Earl Scruggs Mastertone has the definitive Gibson sound, which can be heard on so many great recordings from bluegrass to progressive music. Earl Scruggs had a lot of input into this model, even down to the color, so that it is a very close match to his personal banjo. It has a very full and beautiful ring, with a well balanced tonal quality from the bottom to the top. Up the neck, the Scruggs banjo rings like a bell, and in the open string area the tone is full and deep. This banjo also produces the distinguishable "bluegrass tone" expected from this model, when playing the traditional bluegrass style. However, this model conforms to and performs any style of playing. It is very easy to play, as the tone responds quickly, even when the string is lightly picked. When played hard, the maple continues to produce, also. The tone ring for this banjo is the Kulesh 1930's Reissue 20 hole tone ring, which was built to the exact specifications of Gibson's tone ring which was on their banjos in the early 1930's. The rim is a hard rock 3-ply maple rim, which was also used in the original vintage banjos. Many, many professionals own and have performed with Gibson banjos since the 1930's. The Earl Scruggs model today is a reproduction or reissue of what they built during this era, and the sound confirms this.

The Stelling Sunflower is a very beautiful banjo, and the Stelling workmanship is impeccable. Geoff Stelling designs his own components including the tone ring, and the inlays. His design & sound are specific to Stelling banjos, even down to the bridge and tailpiece. The Stelling Sunflower is not intended to be a copy of any other instrument. It now includes the submerged 200+ year old block style rim, which adds a beautiful bottom end to the tonal quality. The Stelling Sunflower is deep and full in the open string area, and full and bright up the neck. The Sunflower is also a powerful banjo and very open. Stelling compensates the string nut for accurate intonation all the way up the fingerboard, which is also unique. The string height can be set quite low to the fingerboard for ease of playing, and the neck is very comfortable.

The Stelling Sunflower

Each of these banjos is outstanding and each is the choice of professional players. The Gibson tends to have a bell like ring up the neck with a little more sustain, when desired, where the Stelling tends to have a little more bite to it up the neck, with a slightly quicker decay. In the open string area, both of the instruments are resonant and full.

The ideal would be to own one of each. - Janet Davis
