The Deering Sierra
Written by John Sigmon
THIS BANJO HAS A SECRET
Look at the picture. See what you get!
It has a beautiful Rosewood fingerboard with simple pearl dot inlays, Geared tuners, a bound mahogany resonator and above all, a smooth, comfortable neck with this addition: THE FINISH IS SATIN. . . just like in the old days - back before improperly applied high gloss laquers were added that could affect the tone. The Sierra is not pretentious. It has an aura of cosmetic simplicity, yes, but underneath this appearance reside the same high quality components used in the highest priced models. The Sierra is squarely aimed at the mid-range pocket book and is for the person who enjoys outstanding tone and playability without the gloss and glitter.
THE SECRET IS within the instrument...the things that give a good banjo it's spark. These don't show in a picture.
Things like the Tone ring of Bell Bronze. Like the rim of 3-ply maple. Deering has taken the components they put on their premium products, and placed them quietly, out of sight, on this first professional quality instrument. The result: an astonishingly clear, bell like tone with a full range of depth and power from a simply stated banjo.
