JDMC Tortoise Thumbpick Review by Silvio Ferrettifrom Janet Davis Music - The Banjo Store
"Tell you the truth, the first thing that caught my eye was how much the tortoise thumbpick from Janet Davis looked like the old Nationals that I love (which have become increasingly rare to find in their original shape and plastic). So I ordered a couple of them to try, and to my surprise I found them to be - sorry for being sacreligious - better than the old Nationals. By "better" I mean: the kind of plastic they're made of seems to be a little harder than the one the old Nationals were made of (thus more durable), and a lot less brittle (thus a lot less breakable) than the one the modern ones are made of. The resulting sound is both "hard and banging", like my guru Tom McKinney would say, and big and fat, like a thumbpick should sound, IMO.
Also the shape of the blade is absolutely perfect for me, with almost no need to file its tip rounder like I have to do with most thumbpicks. I needed to reshape one the of two thumbpicks (with hot water and a plier), as it was a little too tight for my big thumb, but it took me just a minute and gave me an added bonus: it allowed me to better notice that the pick is shaped in such a way to make it hard to get caught in the 5th string by accident, and also that the blade is angled "right" (IMO) so that it stays closer to the base of the thumb, unlike most thumbpicks where the blade sticks forward and gets too far from the fingerpicks. I don't know who makes these thumbpicks for Janet Davis, but I do know that the builder and Janet Davis got a winner there. I have another 6 tortoise thumbpicks on order, and I'll surely want to try the multicolor and ivoroid ones, because you know, banjo pickers are always looking for that perfect pick..."
