The JLS Special #12 tone ring was originally designed by Bob Cathey. This sand cast ring was based upon a Gibson RB12 tone ring, including the "top tension" weight, alloy, & formulation of metal. The intent,--to yield an original pre-war style tone ring in appearance, content & tonal output. The same procedure was also used with a pre war Gibson RB4, to reproduce an original Style 4 tone ring. Both tone rings are of the same bell bronze with 20 holes drilled.
The #12 is heavier than the #4, & the 20 holes are at reciprocals of the inside face, whereas the holes of the #4 ring go all the way through.
The #12 has a robust & dark virtue to its tone quality. It is quite loud, with good balance between the bass & the treble.
In this price range, this is an excellent value.
